Launch your organization

Transform your business with Cloud capabilities.

What is a Cloud journey?

Before beginning your journey to the Cloud, it is critical your entire organization, from top to bottom, have a clear understanding of what the Cloud actually is, how it can benefit the business, and how it will impact your operations and culture.

How do you prepare for the Cloud and is your organization ready?  Where do you start and what do you migrate first?  How do you increase Cloud adoption within your organization to ensure success?  And how you do know if you are following best practices provided by the major Cloud providers?

Let us help you along your Cloud journey.

A Typical Cloud Journey

What is Cloud?

These days, the terms “Cloud” is being used so frequently and in so many different contexts, it can be confusing as to what the Cloud actually means.  The fact is there are many different variations of Cloud and each has their own responsibilities, benefits and challenges.  We actually like to keep the definition of Cloud really simple and go as far as to relate Cloud to pizza.  It’s a somewhat silly analogy, but it clearly makes the point.

In order to deliver business services, a stack of technology capabilities is required.  By moving to the Cloud, you are paying other service providers to manage some of your technology capabilities for you – this could mean managing your infrastructure, your operating systems and middleware, your data and applications, or the entire technology stack.  By outsourcing some of these capabilities to Cloud providers, you allow your organization to focus more on providing business value as opposed to managing your infrastructure.  At Zuggand, we strongly recommend to our customers they move as far up the stack as possible based on the specific business needs.

What are the benefits of Cloud?

We have helped many organizations start their  Cloud journey and have documented many lessons learned.  By migrating to the Cloud, your IT organization will benefit by no longer having to estimate capacity needs, spending time and resources supporting infrastructure, and gain greater insight into its technology spend by changing its finance model from a CapEx model to OpEx.  However, one important factor about a Cloud journey is that it can benefit all parts of your organization, not just IT.

Migrating to the Cloud also can help to many of the challenges the business faces and can directly align to the overall corporate objectives.  For example, the Cloud can help increase innovation, allow for faster delivery times of business capabilities, provide higher availability and resiliency of mission-critical workloads, ensure more consistent security and compliance, and better enterprise fiscal forecasting.

How do I get to the Cloud?

At Zuggand, we recommend a three-step process to migrate to the Cloud.

The first phase is to complete an assessment to determine your organizational readiness to move to the Cloud.  Have you built the business case and have buy-in from leadership?  Do you know how you are going to fund the project?  Do you have the right skills in-house to build and support the new environment?  How will this impact other business projects currently in process?  Having the answers to these questions, and more, are critical before you ever start migrating.

The second phase involves establishing a devoted, cross-functional team to head up a Proof of Concept (POC) to ensure all the technical and business requirements can be met using Cloud technologies.  By doing a POC first, you will get buy-in from your teams and increase the overall internal adoption of Cloud.  It is critical to identify an application that will show the most business value, but can also be implemented easily and quickly.  This is also the perfect opportunity to train your teams on the new capabilities.

The final phase involves building out a production Cloud environment, creating a roadmap of applications to migrate, and migrating workloads and databases to the new environment.  Shortly after workloads have been migrated, monitoring performance and optimizing the environment to lower costs becomes critical to establishing the return on investment (ROI) as soon as possible.

If you have already migrated workloads to AWS, we recommend periodic Well-Architected Reviews to ensure you are aligning Cloud best practices with your overall business objectives.  The Well-Architected Review consists of assessing a specific, business-critical workload against the five pillars of the WAF, including operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, and cost optimization.

Zuggand is one of the select few AWS Consulting Partners – one of three authorized public-sector partners in the U.S. and the only one in Arizona – qualified to conduct an AWS Well-Architected Review.
